An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

But these probabilities had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the early hours of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in positions right before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," commented an industry expert.

Several of other traders also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with users able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.

The industry were examined under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
