Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to US legislators and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

His attorney entered the plea acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

His attorney announced he would attempt to have the proceedings dismissed for various causes including that his the accused, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being targeted.

The former director was charged just days after the former president pushed his top legal official to proceed against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald informed the judge they planned to present several motions to throw out the legal matter before a legal hearing, stating the legal action was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to assume control of the legal matter.

James Comey's case was originally handled by the original attorney, who stepped down under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into a different opponent - the New York official - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

The former director seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the court on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his partner, his wife and child his daughter, a government attorney who the former government recently fired.

After listening to the magistrate read his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in the courtroom on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he grasped the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the judge.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the moment, the director was overseeing an probe into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Russia and the election effort.

While in office, Mr Comey caused a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was probing Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Clinton were not filed, causing negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys assert Mr Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he deceived the upper house by stating he had not authorized someone at the agency to release to media organizations details about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also allege Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to sway, block and delay" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

In a video the former director shared to his social media after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and charged Trump of acting like a "tyrant".

"My family and I have understood for years that there are ramifications to opposing Donald Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The accusations against Mr Comey emerged after Trump posted on social media demanding his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and additional individuals.
